  6. Chess philanthropist and organizer Joop van Oosterom
  7. sponsored the second edition of a "Battle of the Sexes" chess
  8. match. This one was held in Vienna from 7-22 June.

  10. Similar to last year's Tumba event on the island of Aruba,
  11. the Waltzer tournament was played according to the
  12. Scheveningen format, pitting each member of a team of six
  13. veteran male Grandmasters against each member of a team
  14. consisting of six of the world's best women players in a
  15. double round-robin.

  17. Despite the absence of GMs Judit Polgar and Pia Cramling and
  18. being outrated by an average of 15 points per person, the
  19. women finished with a 40.5-31.5 victory, reversing a 6 point
  20. loss at Tumba. Maya Chiburdanidze, the former Women's World
  21. Champion, easily finished with the best individual score at
  22. 9-3. Zsuzsa Polgar and 58 year old Bent Larsen followed at a
  23. distant 7.5-4.5, while the current Women's Champ, Xie Jun
  24. from China, was alone with 7-5.

  26. Scores of the remaining players were as follows: Ex-World
  27. Champ Vassily Smyslov (the oldest participant at 72), 6.5-
  28. 5.5; Sofia Polgar and Efim Geller, 6-6; Women GMs Arakhamia
  29. and Galliamova-Ivanchuk, 5.5-6.5; Boris Ivkov, 5-7; one of
  30. the strongest Icelandic players of all-time, Fridrik
  31. Olafsson, 4-8, and the former Austrian star, Andreas
  32. Duckstein, 2.5-9.5.

  34. The two teams competed for about $75,000 in prizes.

  36. The game of the tournament was probably Chiburdanidze's
  37. sparkling win over Larsen.
